Swami Purnananda

Spiritual Director of Éire Vedanta Society

Swami Purnananda is an unaffiliated monk in the Ramakrishna/Vivekananda tradition. In his childhood he was influenced by Benedictine monks and educated by Jesuit priests in Zimbabwe, but he soon developed a wider interest in other religious traditions.

At the age of 16, he met Swami Chidananda1 who urged him to meet life-long guru Swami Nihsreyasananda2, a senior monk of the Ramakrishna Order. After a few years of this holy association, he received spiritual initiation in India from Swami Vireswaranandaji.
For many years, as a brahmachari4, he underwent spiritual discipline and studies under the direction and tutelage of Swami Nihsreyasananda3, whom he served as his personal attendant and secretary.
With the obligations due to his ailing father and compulsory conscription for national army service in his country, he entered householder life until, after fulfilling these obligations, he received ordination from Swami Nihsreyasanandaji.
In 1992, Swami Purnananda was elected President of the United Cultural Institute5, where among other things he established an educational bursary fund for deprived girl students, a feeding programme for the poor and he also continued the work of spreading the message of Vedanta in Southern Africa.

In 2000, he was invited to Ireland where he has been preaching the converging truth of Vedanta since as Spiritual Director of the Éire Vedanta Society (nee Institute of United Culture) which he founded.

The Swami directs monetary donations (mainly garnered from workshops and talks) to Irish, Indian and South African charitable and educational causes. Well versed in Vedanta, Yoga, Comparative Theology, Psychology and Science, the Swami conducts workshops on Personality Development, Spirituality, Meditation, Yoga, etc. as well as guiding and counselling others.

Swami Purnananda has also contributed important international research in the use of micro-organisms in mineral processing6 as well as training and business studies and coupled with expertise in psychology counselling has assisted individuals and groups in many aspects of their lives including enhanced health through applied naturopathic principles.
